THE STORY OF VX

In 2001, Joseph and Julie Olson embarked on a journey to plant a church that would impact this generation. With only their son Josiah and a dream, they started Vineyard Xtreme church as a church that would reach the unchurched especially young adults between the ages of 18-35. As time went on God spoke to them through the Picasso painting “The Dance of Youth” that Vineyard Xtreme church was not only a church for this generation but that this generation was multiethnic and a multiethnic church was needed to reflect the community of the South Bay and God's heart for the nations. Over the years Vineyard Xtreme has seen God move in a variety of ways and venues. One of the first venues where the Sunday service was held, was in Maggie's Coffeehouse in Torrance. By the middle of 2003 Maggies began to be too small to accommodate the growth and so the church migrated to a recording studio off of Cabrillo and Torrance Blvd. The next location was King's Harbor church's coffeehouse in 2004 and that is where it remained until Joseph and Julie launched out into the next phase of the vision: Awakenings Coffeehouse.

In January 2006 Vineyard Xtreme moved into Awakenings Coffeehouse which started off as a full on coffeehouse but has recently been more financially successful as an events venue. Through Awakenings Coffeehouse we have touched many lives through open mic and band nights. There have also been many people who come to our weekend service due to the fact that it is held in such a cool atmosphere and subsequently are touched by the presence of God and the openness of the people. Although Awakenings Coffeehouse and VX Church are two different organizations they have benefited each other in a mutual relationship.

In March 2009 after years of hard work and dedication Joseph and Julie decided they needed a change and resigned as pastors of VX Church. They handed VX Church over to Ramon and Yvette Mayo who functioned as assistant pastors from 2004 to 2008. Although there have been many changes along the way and many more changes to come, VX Church is still going forward with its vision to impact the lives of this generation and the many ethnicities that make their home in the Los Angeles area. Many members have been here since the days of Maggie's Coffeehouse and others have recently joined since the pastoral transition but we have all had one heart and one vision from that time until now: Embracing Cultures and Changing Lives
